Australian pilot Frederick Valentich reported an unknown craft pacing his Cessna over Bass Strait, then went silent. Neither he nor his aircraft was ever found.
In October 1978, Australian pilot Frederick Valentich, flying a Cessna 182 across Bass Strait, radioed Melbourne air traffic control to report an unknown craft pacing and orbiting above him. He described a long, metallic object with a green light. His final transmission carried a metallic scraping sound before the channel went silent. No trace of him or the aircraft was ever found. The Australian Department of Transport investigation returned an open finding on the cause.
